Reading Addictions: If I Should Remember by K.D. Van Brunt

Young Adult / YA Mystery
Date Published: February 2, 2016

Memories make us human. Are we still alive if we can’t remember?

Seventeen-year-old Zoe Laleigh has accepted that sometimes the only way to survive today is to wipe away the past. That’s what her loving parents and dedicated psychiatrist are helping her do—forget. What, she’s not entirely sure. All she knows is when an entire year of recollections goes missing, there’s definitely something wrong.

Sometimes the past isn’t so easily forgotten…

Through a flood of dreams, Zoe realizes something happened. Something terrible and tragic. Her lost year is a monster hiding in the shadow of her nightmares, taunting her, but unwilling to reveal itself. When her family relocates, she hopes a new town and new school will help her regain a sense of normalcy. If only it were that easy.

Strangely enough, only her dog, Rin, seems to understand her…

He is somehow connected to her lost year—connected to why she keeps doing things her mother calls reckless, foolish, and dangerous. And when she starts to hear voices and sees things no one else can, she is forced to question her own sanity.

The monster of her nightmares has returned, bringing with it the single question that plagues her at night…

What is there to remember?

Excerpt

Did I say how much I hate Dr. Bazely’s office? It starts with the reception area, which always has this citrusy smell. It’s like cheap perfume, and it gets into my hair and my clothes, so I smell it for days. Of course, there are magazines to read during the wait, and there’s always a wait no matter when you arrive, but the magazines come in two flavors: National Geographic and People. Right, gawk at animals or gawk at humans, your choice. Before we sit, we have to deal with Martha, the receptionist.

“Hello, Martha,” Mom says, as we approach her desk.

“Zoe,” Martha responds with faux pleasure. Her smile is like a Halloween mask she slides down over her face whenever she has to interact with clients. For some reason, they refer to us as clients, not patients. Whatever.

“Dr. Bazely will be with you momentarily,” Martha states, as she always does.

I sit next to Mom and scroll through the texts on my phone. Sara has texted me 10,000 times, Hannah and Tory only slightly less. According to Tory, she spent all first period this morning answering one of two questions: Does Zoe have a brain tumor? and Is Zoe rabid? I also have a text from Derek, but strangely nothing from Alex.

Hey, fox ninja warrior, the wildlife around here wants to know if it’s safe to come out, Derek texted.

I laugh out loud at this and text back, Tell the animals crazy girl is in Boston for the day.

He immediately replies. You looked kind of sexy holding that shoe, you know.

I roll my eyes. That’s what I was going for all right—the sexy, scared shitless look.

“The doctor will see you now,” Martha says, rising to lead me back to his office.

I stow my phone in my back pocket, and Mom gives my hand a gentle squeeze of encouragement. My sessions with Dr. Bazely are one-on-one. No Mom. No Dad. Bazely usually does confer with Mom after we’re done, but he’s made it clear to me many times he will not breach the confidentiality of our sessions with anyone. So even if it turns out I’m an axe murderer, my crimes will remain a secret from my mother.

Dr. Bazely’s office is like a nice den, all wood paneling, comfy, an overstuffed couch, and two wingback chairs. I sit in my usual chair and he sits in the other one halffacing me. A round table is strategically located between us. His shiny, bald head reflects the overhead light like a mirror. Dr. Bazely is never mean with me, but I resent him. He never tells me anything. He knows stuff about me, but he won’t share it with me.

The History of Valentine's Day

L'amore! Love is on the menu this week and I thought I'd share a bit about Valentine's Day!

Once upon a time there was a man named St. Valentine . . .  actually, there are as many as 3 men who were named St. Valentinus.  A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, he healed the daughter of his jailer. The story states before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

Another take on Valentine's Day:
The celebration of Saint Valentine did not have any romantic connotations until Chaucer's poetry about "Valentines" in the 14th century. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love by presenting flowers, sweets, and sending greeting cards. In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart. Valentine's Day symbols used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, mass-produced greeting cards have replaced handwritten valentines.

Yet another take on Valentine's Day:
In Ancient Rome Lupercalia was observed February 13–15. Lupercalia is an archaic rite connected to fertility. Lupercalia was a festival local to the city of Rome. There is no evidence of any link between St. Valentine's Day and the rites of the ancient Roman festival, despite what many believe. Sources claim links to Greco-Roman February holidays were devoted to fertility. Earlier links were focused on sacrifice rather than romantic love. In the ancient Athenian calendar the period between mid-January and mid-February was the month of Gamelion, dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera.

Valentine's Day Facts:
  • Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.
  • In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine's Day card
  • Americans began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s.
  • In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America.
  • Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.
  • 3% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their dogs.
  • Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.
  • In the Middle Ages, men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would pin the name on their sleeves for a week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."

Fall in LOVE all over again!
Romance with a dash of love, a twist of suspense, and a dose of adventure.

Welcome Author Stacy Hoff!

I’m so excited to be a guest on Madelyn Hill’s blog. Even better (if possible) is being on this blog right before Valentine’s Day. In my opinion, February 14th—the day to celebrate love—is one of the best times of the year. Of course, as a romance writer, I’m admittedly biased. As far back as I can remember I have been a fan of love stories. No doubt the best part for me has always been, and still remains, the HEA (“happily ever after”).

Writing romance is not just my creative outlet, it’s my life outlet. By day, I’m a lawyer who focuses on contracts. My “day job” is all about business deals, terms and conditions. There is no room for any emotion in these hard-boiled transactions. So I have to wait until nighttime to let loose my desire for fictional matchmaking.

When I do finally get my chance, I revel in the precious little time I have on my Mac. I indulge my need to match up two characters who are seemingly at odds. The fun is getting the hero and the heroine to realize they truly belong together.

My latest novel, DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC, fits this theme perfectly. At first blush, my heroine, Ana Davis, and hero, William “Redd” Redding, are polar opposites. She is talkative while he is taciturn. She is cheerful while he seems determined to brood. She has never been camping. He is an expert survivalist. She is a TV producer from New York City (who has just been promoted from secretary) and he is a newly retired Special Ops Marine, desperate to finally go back to his home in a small, rural Texas town.

Ana and Redd will have to go through a lot emotionally in order to realize they are each other’s soul mate. But, as a writer, their emotional journey alone would not be enough of a challenge. To really put the thumbscrews on my characters I make them go through a strenuous physically journey, too. Specifically, having to survive in the Arctic Circle for twelve days. With limited camping gear. And with weather that is, let’s just say, not ideal.

The best part about DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC, as indeed with every romance novel ever written, is getting to the HEA. Most would agree that the harder the journey the characters go through, the sweeter their reward of love.

This upcoming Valentine’s Day I wish all of you endless love. Because everyone (not just my characters) needs an HEA.

Stacy's Latest Release - Desire in the Arctic!

Book Blurb
Ana Davis has been given the promotion of the century—from secretary to television producer. But the new job is not without its problems.

The network will do anything for ratings. In the executive’s scramble to come out on top, they reveal Ana’s newest show—one she’s forced to star in herself. She’ll have to survive in the Arctic Circle for twelve days. If she wins, she’ll get the prize money she desperately needs. But the stakes are high, she could lose her very life. Good thing she’s been paired with expert survivalist William “Redd” Redding, a mysterious, solitary and very sexy man. Too bad she thinks he doesn’t even want to talk to her.

William “Redd” Redding is a former Special Ops Marine in need of cash to help a cause near and dear to his heart. What he’s not in need of, however, is Ana Davis—his clueless but captivating partner. It’s up to Redd to ensure the two of them survive in the most dangerous, hostile environment of all. But worse than snowstorms, predators, and a scarcity of food is an even greater danger—Ana. Resisting her, when he wants her more than anything, is his hardest challenge yet. How does he go about protecting her when his ultimate goal is to protect his heart?

DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC is the sequel to DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES. Although it is helpful to read the books in order, it is not necessary.
